West Virginia Coal Mine Wars

Baldwin-Felts Detective at Glen Jean.
The Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency played a much
publicized role in the early history of southern West Virginia. The agency
served purposes both constructive and malevolent. On the one hand, it functioned
as a stabilizing force in the absence of adequate public law enforcement, and on
the other, it sometimes carried out brutal repression which helped to incite
some of the nation's most violent industrial conflicts.
